Brake rotors, also known as brake discs, are the flat, circular components connected to the wheels designated to slow your car down when you step on the brake pedals. It turns motion into heat by creating friction with the brake pads, which are clamped by the brake calipers.

There are four types of brake rotors, which are designed for specific driving conditions and vehicle type. Most vehicles use the blank and smooth type, while other options include drilled, slotted, and both.

Your discs should be replaced every 40,000 to 70,000 miles or when it's worn out. Signs of a worn out rotor include visible damage, warping, uneven wear, and minimum thickness. These symptoms would result in frequent squealing, sudden swerving, and a longer braking distance over time. If your wheels begin to smoke from the inside, then it's also a sign of overheating led by excess wear and tear.

Keep in mind that you will need to change your brake pads the same time you change your rotors. If you neglect to change both within ample time, then the rest of your braking system will likely fail with it.
