Your brake calipers are responsible for slowing your car down by clamping on the brake rotors through the brake pads. It's connected to the master cylinder and the rest of the brake system through a series of valves, hoses, and tubes that deliver brake fluids to and from your brake pedals.

There's no constant need to maintain your brake calipers. At most, you'll only need to clean and lubricate them to prevent wear and tear over time. Though, even then, the heat caused by friction against the rotors will cause your braking system to deplete eventually. Your calipers may not be a maintenance part, but its value may decrease if you don't use your car often, or if you neglect to change your brake rotors and discs when it's necessary.

You'll know you need to change your calipers when your wheels start to vibrate, your car jerks to one side when you step on the brake pedal, your braking distance extends uncomfortably, and of course, when your antilock braking system (ABS) warning lights come on your instrument panel.
